Positive impact on the Bottom Line
Shearing in harsh weather really used to affect Malcolm Day of Echo in Yass, he could lose a couple of hundred sheep out of his 2200-2500 he shears a year. They experience the full weather spectrum in August (minus 5 degrees, snow storms and 'anything') shearing a month before lambing starts in September.
Since using Thermoskin, that has changed.
We had a great chat with Malcolm and here's why he believes in Thermoskin:
1. Keep Better Condition in your Ewes and Increase Your Lamb Percentage
*The cold devastates the ewes. They lose condition and by lambing time they are still light and not producing as much milk. By keeping the ewes warmer with Thermoskin the lambs have much better success at staying alive because the mothers are not trying to stay warm. They get the nutrition they need to produce milk and take better care of their lambs.
*Malcolm’s lamb percentage was 75-80% of their 800-1000 lambs, now that he uses thermoskin when shearing, up to 95% of lambs are surviving.
2. Positive Impact on The Bottom Line
*It costs approx $3,000 to Thermoskin 2,000 sheep and gives a return of $10,000.
*When selling sheep they have the 5-10kg they would have lost after shearing without Thermoskin, plus an extra 100 lambs are saved @ min $50/ head = extra $5000
*Bottom line figures are impacted from turning lambs quicker and it starts to snowball. Even if you lift your percentage by 5% more lambs, you can cull you old stock, or straight out sell your sheep. In the following year the ewes are cutting more wool, the flow on effect means more money.
