The Ultimate Protective Shield
Thermoskin, a product made in Australia, is a lanolin-based liquid designed to be sprayed onto sheep after shearing. Its primary purpose is to reduce the risk of hypothermia and mortality in sheep by providing warmth. Additionally, treated sheep experience improved overall condition compared to untreated sheep. Thermoskin forms a thin, environmentally friendly film that covers the sheep and is suitable for application on all sheep breeds, with greater success observed in sheep scored 2 and higher. In essence, it acts as a protective shield against harsh weather conditions.
When exposed to cold temperatures, sheep instinctively seek shelter, huddle together, and shiver to generate body warmth. However, this behaviour prevents them from grazing, leading to a loss of condition. Consequently, sheep losses can impact profitability. This can be reduced by having sheep pass through the Thermoskin spray unit for a few seconds. After approximately six minutes the sheep have stopped shivering and can graze comfortably.
It is important to note that Thermoskin can be used in conjunction with solvent-based lice treatments but NOT WATER BASED ones. If sheep have been treated with water-based treatments (backline), they must be COMPLETELY DRY before applying Thermoskin.

Thermoskin Plus is a version of Thermoskin with the addition of UV absorbers to minimise sunburn. These UV ingredients are expensive and make it a much more complex manufacturing process which all adds to the cost of the product. Thermoskin Plus is therefore only made to order.
It can be used on naked sheep, on the ears and rump which are very vulnerable to sunburn. It has also been used when the biological harvesting nets have split and failed, exposing the sheep to sun damage.
